2021 Spring Game: Baylor’s Green & Gold Game
I couldn’t have hand picked a better day for Baylor’s spring exhibition game than the one we got. 77º and breezy, a few clouds here and there– it was absolutely pristine.
In comparison to Georgia’s G-Day spring exhibition in 2018, the Green & Gold game was laid back. The Dawgs had the year’s most-attended spring game of the year at over 82,000 spectators whereas a few thousand showed for Baylor this year. Regardless, it was FBS football.
Spring exhibitions were overshadowed and a bit less anticipated than usual with the ongoing FCS season. While I can’t complain about year-round football, the spring games lost a bit of their hype in the mix.
The real buzz was around the Baylor men’s basketball team, who had just brought Baylor their first NCAA Tournament championship. Future NBA prospects like Jared Butler, MaCio Teague, and Dayvion Mitchell mingled in the stands, signing autographs and taking pictures.
If you came early, you got free Whataburger (a Texas delicacy). Families enjoyed their burger on the steps leading to the Brazos River and the Bear Armada docks. There’s not many better ways to spend a spring Saturday afternoon.
The game itself was a defensive slugfest marred by inexperience from the quarterbacks. When the final bell sounded, the Baylor offenses combined for four interceptions and a safety. While the exhibition was meant to be a step forward in the QB competition, but it ended up just muddying the situation more.
With this spring game season in the books, it’s time to shift focus to the upcoming Summer Road Trip.
